Why are there so few free Touhou assets?

You would think, that a huge franchise like Touhou with its explicit endorsement of Doujin culture would have vast arrays of spin-offs with free assets everywhere. Indeed, if you typed Touhou into a search engine and limit yourself to Creative Commons, you'd be astonished to see how many results persist – and high-quality ones at that. However, when it comes to game assets, the results are… holy crap, I can't believe that's already everything. Why the huge gap? Let's ask Yukari!

Okay, jokes aside, I don't know what Yukari would say to this. But I can give you my own opinion. First of all, I'd like to highlight some notable exceptions.

  • Danmakufu uses the Japanese equivalent to the WTFPL, which I find super dope. They also link to a ton of assets.
  • Taisei uses the Expat license.
  • Frozen Starfall uses CC BY-NC for their songs and they have a huge instrumental collection, that once could use.
  • Norowareta Night similarly uses a mix of Creative Commons licenses for most of theirs.

The songs here are important, because as a Visual Novel developer, I do like myself some nice title tracks, but apart from the hobbyist Touhou MIDIs I can put together, I completely lack any proficiency in sound design. (You might as well argue, that even those are bad and I won't judge you for thinking so. They wouldn't be in my playlist normally either, whereas Frozen Starfall and Norowareta Night dominated it when I was still deeper in the fandom.)

For me, the guidelines ZUN puts out feel somewhat restrictive. It basically voids any free software license, but also many of the Creative Commons licenses, that people over here use. In a way that you have to hope ZUN never fights Taisei over copyright infringement, because hypothetically it would allow someone to distribute it over commercial channels and it contains named Touhou characters, such as Reimu or Marisa. The thing is, I can understand to an extent why ZUN is so restrictive, and clearly the encouragement of Doujins worked as there's more doujin content than you could ever hope to take in, but I still feel the Touhou community is somewhat hostile to the concept of sharing with ZUN himself putting out the biggest incentive. It instead seems as though it rather cultivated a field in which everyone just asks for their own permission to sell stuff and then charges whatever price they deem reasonable.

I took a peek into the fandom again, because the Touhou Pride Game Jam has some super positive vibes and it would hurt to miss out on it just because I myself have mostly moved from Touhou to freer software, particularly also freer games. I hope the Pride Jam gives me a reason to stay or at least peek at it more frequently.
